COUCHSURFING: A Travel Style
A traditional method of travel is to stay in a hotel, use a guidebook, and seek out suggested attractions. While this can be comfortable and exciting, it doesn't allow travelers to get as immersed in the culture.
CouchSurfing revolutionized travel and it is our favorite way of exploring a new town. Instead of staying at an impersonal hotel, we sleep in people's homes. We've stayed with an older businessman, extended families, a Mongolian ger with six family members, a university student's floor in Vietnam, a Chinese artist's studio, a family's tax accounting office, a luxurious apartment of a retired 34-year-old, and the list goes on. Every experience varies. Sure, one perk is that it's free accommodation. But there's much more to CouchSurfing; it is a cultural exchange. Surfers learn more about the local culture and hidden gems while hosts can bring the world to themselves, even when they're not traveling. |
